Proper Film has recently concluded negotiations with writer/director Emma Bestall to develop, finance and produce Bestall’s debut project as director, magical-realist LGBTIQ documentary SHOW ME LOVE.
SHOW ME LOVE is an explicit, documentary project that follows a group of queer Capetonians, of multiple orientations, identities and ethnicities, as they attempt to produce a series of feminist erotic film clips destined for an interactive web-series. As the project progresses, their worlds of fantasy (pornography) and reality (their lives) collide; and they soon realise that the gathering has far more to offer them than just a professional collaboration. The film intimately and authentically follows the group in a combination of verite-style and carnivalesque magical-realism that will seamlessly blend the characters’ daily lives and loves with their ultimate fantasies. It’s not long before the characters become filmmakers themselves, taking charge of the camera as they attempt to understand what this project means to them and the world at large as they fight to find a place in society dominated by heteronormative standards and confusing ideals.
“When first discussing the project with Emma, I was immediately struck by the bravery, authenticity and innovation of this unique concept”, Proper Film’s David Horler said of the project. “From our research it seems pretty clear that the LGBTIQ landscape remains deeply fractured in Africa and I feel this project presents a fantastic opportunity to create a local language that helps better encapsulate the many faces of love, intimacy and sex on the continent, a market in dire need of stronger representation on these topics. Similarly, by setting this film in a wholly African context and against the backdrop of a global African city, we hope to capitalise on the unique cultural specificity and intrigue of the familiar subject matter, drawing a larger foreign audience to help more effectively raise broad awareness.”
Bestall’s most recent film in the capacity of screenwriter and editor, I, AFRIKANER, a story of four generations of conservative Afrikaans farmers, filmed over a near decade, following their reactions to the changing landscape of South Africa after the end of Apartheid; had its worldwide premiere in-competition at IDFA in 2013 and has gone on to receive critical acclaim.
Currently, several key characters in SHOW ME LOVE have already been secured with various pilot scenes and clips having been concluded as Proper Film begins packaging the film for financing to commence in late 2015.
