Cape Town, South Africa – 10 October 2015

Proper Film is very proud to welcome award-winning director Elan Gamaker and his sci-fi teen romance project HEADLAND to join the company’s slate of elevated genre feature films.

HEADLAND is set in a future South Africa; where the government has provisionally renamed the Platteland and Overberg regions ‘Hinterland’ and ‘Headland’ and declared them independent self-governing territories. To avoid becoming victims of ethnic cleansing, all people living in areas in which they were not born – and vice versa – must ‘go home’, meaning Hinterlander Primo January and Headlander Bethany Lawrence must be uprooted and rehoused. The teenagers do not meet each other on Partition Weekend, during which families are displaced and forced to live in strangers’ homes. But as the only children in their respective families they end up in one another’s rooms. Primo discovers Bethany’s diary, begun on the day of her brother’s death and featuring the imagined courting of her estranged parents. On the other side of the mountains, Bethany discovers Primo’s story-book; full of tall tales of adventure and discovery featuring what he calls his Invisible siblings. As their imaginations run wild with the personal documents they have found, the pair fall in love with each other while unsure if they will ever meet. Then the supposedly temporary Partition becomes permanent, and Primo seeks out one last, life-threatening opportunity to meet Bethany.

“Headland strikes a perfect narrative balance between mainstream entertainment and thought-provoking social commentary”, Proper Film’s David Horler said of the project. “Elan’s accomplished writing skills and innovative approach to storytelling will no doubt weave together an approachable, complex and richly detailed film that we hope will continue to subvert expectations when it comes to new forms of African cinema.” Similarly, Gamaker noted, “With this elevated genre project, I hope to push the boundaries of South African cinema, updating and reshaping the kinds of themes, tones, visuals and ideas to which local and international audience have become accustomed. Given their current slate and their track record, as well as David’s positive and progressive approach to film production, Proper Film seemed the perfect fit for the project and I look forward to our collaboration.”

HEADLAND will mark Elan Gamaker’s fourth feature film after acclaimed comedy VISA VIE (2010), psychological drama ICEHORSE (2014) and supernatural thriller SATURN, which is currently completing its financing round under Fireworx Media.
