Cape Town, South Africa, 25 March 2015
Proper Film (South Africa) and Fasad (Sweden) have wrapped principal photography on the pilot sequence for Fasad’s upcoming multi-country co-production, audio-visual documentary experience AETERNA.
AETERNA is a poetic interpretation of the Anthropocene, the present interval in time in which many geologically significant conditions are being profoundly altered by human activities. Working with some of the most innovative talents in cinematography, music and animation, as well as one of the most progressive sustainability research centres in the world, Aeterna aims to create a new narrative about our relationship with nature.
Using a film language of compassion and beauty, rather than fear and judgement and focussed on individual human experiences; these themes will play a central motif for the cultural voices that shape the film as the team strives to reintegrate society with the environment. Split into three parts, the documentary project will comprise contemplative and reflective images and music (accompanied by a live orchestral score during its committed premiere at an A-list film festival in 2017), which aim to create an understanding of the problem as well as incite change.
The South African leg of the film was shot in multiple locations within the Western and Northern provinces of South Africa and features carefully composed and striking cinematography by Fredrik Wenzel in locations as diverse as a Khoi San homestead, an exclusive Cape Town nightclub, textile manufacturing and agricultural processing factories and in various townships surrounding the Cape Town metro.
Currently the Aeterna team is prepping for similar shoots in Iceland and Brazil and we’ll keep you posted as this innovative and ground-breaking project takes shape.
