Social Realist Drama | Fiction Short | Available Now

VOD STREAMING & PURCHASE COMING SOON

Flea, so nicknamed for his pestering nature and small size, awkwardly navigates his way into a teenage gang led by school drop-out Titus. Armed with some cigarettes and an ambitious plan to buy alcohol from an illegal vendor, he soon discovers the sacrifice he must make may not be worth the acceptance he craves.

Set against the harsh back-drop of the urban-industrial district of Salt River in Cape Town; The Flea is a social-realist drama that investigates the lack of human connection within gang-culture and men who subscribe to the belief that sensitivity and tenderness are a sign of weakness. The film explores to what extent masculinity depends on the ability to appear powerful amongst misguided youth and how individual strength can effect lasting change.
